In the heart of Gippsland, just over an hours drive east of Melbourne lies the Latrobe Valley. Nestled between the beautiful Strzelecki mountain ranges and Baw Baw National Park, the Valley’s landscape has been scarred by over a century of coal extraction. But it’s not just the landscape that carries the burden of this industry, the Valley is one of the most harrowing examples of how the fossil fuel industry tears communities to shreds. The renewable energy economy can not be based on the same broken logic of the fossil fuel economy. Climate justice is not just about ending greenhouse gas emissions, it’s about making sure we don’t repeat the mistakes of the fossil fuel era.
