Power Renewable Energy

Renewable energy comes from sources that naturally replenish like the sun, and the wind, unlike coal, oil and gas, which take millions of years to form and run out as we burn them.

Renewables are simply cheaper. Over 90% of newly built renewable projects already beat fossil fuels on cost, and wind and solar are now the cheapest form of energy in human history. Solar costs have fallen 87% since 2010, and battery storage costs have dropped 93% in the same window.

The price of renewable energy also stays stable, unlike that of coal, oil and gas. Sun and wind are free and unowned - they don't rely on chokepoints, tankers or pipelines, so once built, renewables keep prices low and steady for good. Fossil fuel prices can and do fluctuate wildly: when the Iran conflict escalated, oil prices soared past US$100 a barrel almost overnight, as roughly a fifth of global oil shipped through the Strait of Hormuz. This was a shock felt in fuel and food prices worldwide within days.

As long as our energy systems depend on coal, oil and gas, household bills stay hostage to volatile energy markets. Renewable energy is as much a cost of living solution, as it is a climate solution.

Absolutely. The renewable sector employed 16.6 million people worldwide in 2024 - more than double than in 2012. And this number is growing fast.

Yes. The old worry that renewables can't keep the lights on when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing is outdated. Paired with battery storage, hydropower and smarter, better-connected grids, wind and solar can supply reliable power around the clock - research shows a system built on diverse renewables plus storage can meet demand the vast majority of the time, at costs comparable to today's grid.

The technology already exists and works. What's actually missing is the political will and investment to build it at scale - not a gap in what renewables can physically do. Every dollar and every policy still propping up fossil fuels is a dollar not spent building the stable, renewable energy grid we need.

Renewable energy provides some clear environmental, social and economic benefits over fossil fuels:

• Fewer emissions: Fossil fuels account for around 68% of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90% of all CO2 emissions - renewables produce little to none, directly slowing the climate crisis.
• Cleaner air, fewer deaths: Burning fossil fuels causes an estimated 5.1 million premature deaths a year from air pollution alone - deaths that renewable energy simply doesn't cause.
• No running out: Sun and wind are inexhaustible, unlike coal, oil and gas, which are finite and only get harder and dirtier to extract over time.
• More jobs: The renewable sector employed 16.6 million people worldwide in 2024 - more than double 2012's total - proof that a fossil-free economy creates more good work, not less.
• Price stability, not price shocks: Renewables don't rely on chokepoints, tankers or pipelines, so once built, they keep prices low and stable - unlike fossil fuels, where conflict in a single region can send oil prices soaring past $100 a barrel overnight.
• Cheaper to build, cheaper to run: Over 90% of new renewable projects already beat fossil fuels on cost, with no fuel to buy and ship once the infrastructure is in place.

Community-led renewable energy means solar, wind and microgrids that are owned, controlled and run by the people who use them - not distant corporations or shareholders. It matters because renewable energy shouldn't just swap fossil fuel power plants for a handful of new corporate giants, replicating the same extractive systems. Energy systems should put power, literally and politically, back into people's hands. Community ownership keeps profits local, cuts out the middleman, and builds energy systems that deliver benefits to the people who depend on them.

Honestly? It's not because fossil fuels make more sense anymore. It's because a small number of very powerful companies don't want to lose their grip. Oil, gas and coal corporations still pocket $725 billion a year in government subsidies, and they spend heavily lobbying to keep it that way, blocking the rules that would let renewable energy compete on a level playing field. The technology is ready. The costs already favor renewables. What's missing is the political will to stop propping up an industry that's had its thumb on the scale for a century. That's exactly what we're fighting to change.
